School Lunch
Cost: $1.75 Please inquire in the office for more information on Free or Reduced lunch program.  Adult lunch price is $2.75.  We encourage parents to fill out the paperwork for "Free or Reduced Lunch."  A large number of federal programs depend on the percentage of people who qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch.  Whether or not a person actually participates is not monitored.  If our percentage of parents who qualify falls below a certain point, a reduced amount of money is made available to Kennedy Elementary in a number of programs.  Read more about School Lunch by going to the School Handbook by clicking here.

Busing
Students living 1.5 miles or more from school may ride the bus. All kindergarten students may also ride the bus if the parents request this in writing (forms available in the office). Contact the district Transportation Supervisor at 359-3300 EXT 3021.  Read more about bussing in the handbook by clicking here.

Fees
By paying the fee of $20:00 per student, we do all the shopping and you do not have to buy anything. There is an additional "snack" fee for kindergarten students of $12.00.  If you have financial difficulties please speak with the principal. We can discuss several possible options.  We suggest that students have their own backpacks to transpport books, papers, etc.

Visitors
All visitors should report to the office and obtain a visitor's pass. Parents picking up children early should report to the office and officially sign students out for the time they will miss. We encourage parents to volunteer at the school. For further information feel free to contact the school office.

Parent Involvement
We encourage parent involvement. At the beginning of each year we will be conducting a "Back to School Night." Parents may come and meet teachers and administration and receive more information on expectations and operating procedures.

In the middle of the first trimester there will be a formal parent/teacher conference. This is usually a short meeting in which progress and concerns are discussed with parents. If you feel a need to contact teachers before that formal conference please feel free to do so. Teachers and administration are ready and willing to discuss concerns as they occur.

Read the Parent Involvement Policy by clicking here.

Read the Parent-Student-Teacher Compact by clicking here.

Student Placement
Each January we begin the process of identifying new kindergarten students for the coming year. We ask for your assistance in this endeavor.

As we begin the assignment of students to their teachers for the coming year the placement team consisting of teachers, administrators and special services and resource personnel are involved in:

  • Balancing the classes with high, medium, and lower achieving students.
  • Balancing the classes with near-equal numbers of boys and girls.
  • Balancing the classes with near-equal numbers of students.
  • Balancing the classes with near-equal numbers of ethnic minorities.

If parents have an educational concern about the placement of a child for the coming year, please submit a letter in writing to Mr. Shirley by April 30. All letters and concerns will be discussed with the placement team. We cannot guarantee all parent requests can be honored.

For example, please do not request that your child be placed in the same class with another specific child. The parents of the other child may want something entirely different, or there may be teacher concerns in placing some students together.

It should be understood that we begin by placing the students we know will be attending. For example, those registering shortly before school begins may not have as many options available.

Class lists are usually posted on the school front doors a few days before registration.
